Porsche Toyota on Tuesday unveiled the first production hybrid version of its iconic 911 sports car, with a starting price of $164,900.
The 2025 911 Carrera GTS Hybrid marks a major change for the iconic German sports car as the auto industry focuses on more electrified vehicles and tougher fuel economy standards.
The executives VolkswagenThe automaker says the 911 will be the last car in its portfolio to offer an all-electric model, in order to preserve the car’s renowned driving dynamics, which it says the hybrid offers.
“We developed and tested various ideas and approaches to determine the best hybrid system for the 911,” Frank Moser, Porsche’s vice president for the 911 and 718 model lines, said in the release. “The result is a unique powertrain that is well integrated into the overall concept and delivers a significant performance boost.”
The new 911 Carrera GTS accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than the previous non-hybrid GTS model, and reaches a top speed of 194 mph. This model is powered by a newly developed 3.6-liter boxer hybrid engine that produces 532 horsepower and 449 foot-pounds of torque.
The 911 Carrera GTS Hybrid will be available from $164,900 for the coupe and $178,200 for the convertible or cabriolet, both of which are available in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations.
Orders for the hybrid model are being accepted now, with deliveries to U.S. dealers scheduled for the end of 2024.
Porsche is the latest automaker to expand or add hybrid vehicles to its lineup amid a slower-than-expected adoption of electric vehicles. The company’s current electric vehicle lineup includes six plug-in hybrid Cayenne models, three plug-in hybrid Panamera models and 10 electric Taycan models. The company also uses hybrid engines in races, including the 911.
Porsche said it expects at least 80 percent of the vehicles it sells globally to be partly or fully electric by 2030, based on customer demand.
