Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) is demanding that the Biden administration disclose how it plans to curb the use of cryptocurrencies in fentanyl trafficking, according to a letter she and other lawmakers sent to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Warren and Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana) asked for updates on “measures to crack down on drug traffickers’ misuse of virtual currencies to expand their businesses and launder their ill-gotten gains,” the letter said, arguing that “cryptocurrency has played an increasingly important role in the global fentanyl trade over the past decade, both in facilitating the manufacture and trafficking of fentanyl and in laundering the proceeds of drug cartels’ crimes.”
