
But it is also understandable why someone like Serkis would champion cryptocurrencies for political purposes. In reality, they are simply aware that cryptocurrencies are already a partisan issue and are acting accordingly. We often hear that the industry itself is apolitical because blockchain aims for “trustworthy neutrality,” but that is simply not true. Cryptocurrency is a check to the government. It was and is a political project. As I wrote in 2021:
“If Bitcoin solves the climate crisis, it will be through the success of freer markets rather than progressive planning. Equality can never be resolved: the vast holdings of early Bitcoiners cannot be redistributed without destroying property rights in a technologically protected system that undermines state power. If we prevent war, we will also dismantle the progressive welfare state.”
